Airbags 101
AIR BAGS ARE NOT GOOD!
Since the incorporation
of the air bag in most modern vehicles today, many lives have been
saved. The air bag system when used for its purpose is a wonderful
safety devise and works well.
|
How does it save me?
The air bag
system is basically a system of electrical wire, motion
sensors, and nylon bag (with some highly explosives inside.
When the vehicle experiences (what the vehicle manufacture
considers the proper collision force the sensors send an
electrical signal the air bag assembly then a highly
explosive charge is ignited to deploy the air bag.

Look for the
color yellow!
Your objective
when instilling your remote entry or security system, or
anything else on your vehicle is to stay away from this
system.
Do not be alarmed
as, most vehicle manufactures usually make it quite clear
anything related to the air bag.
The best rule of
thumb is to always look for the bright yellow color from the
plugs to the fuses that protect the air bag circuit.
They will
typically have some form of bright yellow incorporated into
it's design.
|
|
So...what do I not do?
However, when
working on your vehicle, you should take great care not to
tamper with
If your
vehicle is equipped with an airbag safety system, you should consider
the following when installing your remote entry or security system:
|
-
Avoid disconnecting the vehicles battery if
possible.
-
Avoid using test light especially one using
an incandescent light bulb, as they may draw a mush higher
current than expectable by the air bag circuit.
-
PROBING THE WRONG
WIRE CAN DEPLOY OR DAMAGE THE AIR BAG SYSTEM!

About data bus or (multiplexing)
Most newer
vehicles will use a low voltage or data bus (also known as
"multiplexing) system that control many functions of the
vehicle. The brain or control module for this system can be
damaged if you probe or "tap" into wrong wires.
|
-
Us a V.O.M. meter to
measure any voltage
-
Most vehicles will
have a bright yellow plastic jacket around all wire pertaining
to the airbag, if so stay as far away from those wires as
possible
-
Never probe wires you
are unsure of, especially near any air bag location and around
the steering column.
|
|
What not to do
-
Avoid using test light especially one using
an incandescent light bulb, as they may draw a mush higher
current than expectable by the B.C.M (body control Modula). circuit.
-
Us a V.I.N. meter to
measure any voltage
-
Never probe wires you
are unsure of.
