How-to-guides - Understanding auxiliary
outputs
(trunk release)
|
What are auxiliary outputs
of your car security system and how can I open my
trunk with it |
|
Auxiliary
outputs
Auxiliary
outputs are simply
other channels or voltage
signal outputs to activate any electronic device in your
vehicle.
|
Auxiliary
outputs
Auxiliary
output feature found on most vehicles security systems
allows the remote control to control optional any electronic devices
located on the vehicle, such as rolling up windows, opening sunroof,
or any other device.
This feature usually comes in the form of a single
wire having a negative pulse output when a specific button
is pressed on the remote.
|
Most the systems
will have at a low current capacity on this wire, however by
adding a simple relay, ( see
Understanding Relays ) you could add just about
any electrical
device you desire. most security systems will allow you to
allocate a specific button on your remote to a specific
channel or output.
Let's assume that you have four button on
your remote and the security system bran has three optional
outputs or three wires for each channel.
You can program a
specific button to activate that output to
the
specified
wire.
|
What
button does what?
Some systems will also
allow you to allocate what type of output signal will occur during
activation of that channel.
Either a pulse output or a press and hold
on until button is released. This feature creates a more desirable
output as it allows for, lets say a sunroof to be opened until the
button is released or for applications that only require a short
pulse such as the trunk release or gas fill door to open.
|
|
Can you help me do that?
Adding an optional feature is usually as easy as finding the
correct wire and proper signal to activate your particular
feature.
In this case we will be adding the trunk release
function to or system. Assuming you already have power trunk
release on your vehicle, you should start by identifying the
wire in the vehicles wiring system.
|
If your vehicle is not equipped with na power trunk release,
you can add on to it. They are basically motorized or
magnetic servos that will move the unlock mechanism of the
vehicles trunk locking system. You can find these servos at
most audio shop or online.
|
Here we go!
As with most vehicle power futures theirs usually a "common"
place that you will find the wire that is required
to achieve that particular objective.
With the trunk
release, it can usually be fond in either the drivers or
passengers kick
panel.
The "kick
panel" is the panel
that your left foot (If on drivers side) "hangs" around when driving.
Most vehicle
kick panels will snap off or will have a screw or two
holding it in place.
Once you have
access to the correct harness, you will want to identify the
wire color and signal activation voltage. Either positive or
negative.
|
Types of activation signals!
There are usually
two different types of signals used to activate the trunk
release feature.
|
What do I have?
You can verify
the type of signal used for the trunk release by using a
digital test light (for safety to the cars electronics) or a
voltage meter)
You should begin by locating the wire that
sends the specific voltage and while pressing the
trunk release button on the vehicle, you will want to look
for the change on you test light.
Most digital test lights
will turn green if a negative voltage is present or red if a
positive voltage is present.
