Why add an equalizer?
Equalizers will separate each tone
control known as bands, equalizers may have five bands, nine
bands, twelve bands and more!
Each band may control many different
types of voice's and musical instruments.
The low base for instance will control
large drums. The mid bass will control the smaller drums. The
midrange will control human voice, and so on…..
The more the band’s the more control
you have over your music sound reproduction.
Typically five to nine bands will
work just fine in most automotive applications, adding more
bands will simply increase the control you have over your
music.

Typically there are two different types
of equalizers on the market today:
Graphic
Graphic equalizers are the most
popular, and are typically mounted under the radio, glove
compartment, or any other location that is easily
accessible.
Graphic equalizers have earned their name by the
way the controls are aligned. That is, that once you have chosen your desired
sound tone, it will look somewhat like a graph.
Parametric
Parametric
equalizers accomplish the
same goals however, they are typically mounted in the trunk and all tone controls are preset and left as they are, unless
otherwise changed.
Parametric equalizes do not indicate the
graph and are set to a specific frequency.

Passive or Active?
Passive
Passive equalizers are the most popular
and simply indicate they are Pre-amp only and are
designed to go from the radio pre-amp into the equalizer and
then
into your vehicle’s amplifiers.
Active
Active equalizers are equalizers with
built in amplifiers, while this is a more convenient type of
equalizer to install, it does have its disadvantages.
